Summit night is normally the coldest and most demanding part of the climb. The team starts late at night or very early in the morning, moving slowly by headlamp toward the crater rim.
The pace
Guides keep a steady rhythm and monitor each climber closely. Reaching the rim is only part of the day; the descent back to camp also requires concentration and energy.
Realistic expectations
Weather, altitude and individual health determine the final decision. Turning around when a guide advises it is a responsible outcome, not a failure.
